President Greig announced the death of W. H. Hass on November 30, 1959.

Vice-president Anderson took the chair and introduced Joe Greig for his Presidential Address. Charlie expressed apparent appreciation that Joe had been such a conscientious President and had not missed a single scientific meeting or Council session. He gave the impression that this had left little for the Vice-presidents to do during the year.  This erroneous idea was corrected by Greig in the opening remarks of his Address.  Joe pointed out that Charlie had served as Chairman, and Louis Conant as member, of the Committee on Insurance.

The Presidential Address followed: J.W. Greig-- Development of phase equilibrium studies in the interest of petrology. Following long-standing custom, there was no discussion of the President's message.

67th Annual Meeting

December 9, 1959

The 67th Annual Meeting of the Society was held in the John Wesley Powell Auditorium, Wednesday evening, December 9, at 9:20 pm, President J. W. Greig, presiding.

The minutes of the 66th Annual Meeting were read and approved.

The annual report of the Secretaries for 1959 was read and approved.

The annual report of the Treasurer was presented by Helen Worthington (nee Weissenborn).  Helen assured the Society that all was in order, financially, and that the cash balance on hand as of December 7 was $1036.58.  This represents an increase of $481.85 over last year, thanks mainly to our new, insurance-oriented members.

The Auditing Committee, Joe Fahey, chairman, assured the Society that the books are in excellent shape and that the securities in the safe-deposit box do indeed bear the numbers and values indicated.

The Treasurer's and Auditing Committee's reports were unanimously accepted although little, if anything, had been said about beer.

The President announced that no amendments to the Constitution had been submitted to the Council.  No new business was brought up from the floor, despite prodding from the President regarding the beer situation.

The report of the Awards Committee, consisting of K. L. Lohman, chairman, W. S. White, B. J. Skinner, and C. S. Denny was presented by Ken Lohman.  Ken expressed appreciation for the fine programs arranged by Doug Kinney (sic) and the program committee.  (Doug later corrected Ken-- the outstanding programs were actually the result of Don White's fine work as program chairman.)

First prize of $20 was awarded to W. Gary Ernst (introduced as Gary Grant!) for his paper: "Glaucophane stability and the glaucophane schist problem." The smiling author was present to receive the check and the well-earned applause of the Society.

Second prize of $10 was awarded to J.C. Reed, Jr. and Bruce H. Bryant for their paper: "Lower Cambrian and Late Precambrian rocks in the Grandfather Mountain window, North Carolina."

Three Honorable Mention awards were given to: R.S. Sigafoos for his most enjoyable talk on "Botanical evidence of floods and flood-plain deposition"; Eugene Simpson for his controversial "A ground-water mechanism for the deposition of glacial till"; and Emily Japer for her paper "Age measurements on some Alpine and pre-Alpine micas."

Lohman stated that he had intended to talk about good and bad slides, but that the slides he had prepared as good ones had turned out so badly that he had changed his mind. Ken promised to give an informal communication on the slide problem in the near future.

The Sleeping Bear cup was awarded by Josh Tracey, Chairman of the committee which also included Harry Ladd and Jim Balsley. Josh carried the cup to the podium in a paper bag which he alluded to as "... lunch, because the report will be such a long one." After considerable fumbling with the light switch on the speaker's stand, Josh sought help from Joe Greig who clearly was more conversant with the theory of chain-pull-type switches. Josh apologized for his appearance as Chairman, insisting that it was all a mistake that had taken place when he stopped into the Men's Room during the Committee meeting. The problem this year, in contrast to the good old days, was a dearth of, not an abundance of, candidates for the Award. Josh pointed out that the Committee had set up only one qualification this year-- that "an idea was presented that would turn the Society's thoughts towards the future." The forward-looking recipient, a man whose informal remarks had been of  “uniformly sustained excellence", has been a consistent critic of geologists, over the years. This geologist-turned-geochronologist clinched the award with his recent comment on Gordon Lill's Moho talk. “Why is it that scientists don’t know where they are going to get there but they seem to know exactly how much it will cost?” * The blushing Henry Faul humbly accepted the cup with the now familiar words: "I am speechless." No one really believed him.

The meeting then turned to the election of officers for 1960. The President indicated that a single slate had been nominated and that no other candidates had been proposed to the Council, as provided for in the By-Laws. He then called for nominations from the floor. Art Baker tried to obstruct due process of the By-Laws by moving that nominations be closed, but President Greig persisted and asked for nominations for each office in turn. There being none, it was moved by Lohman, seconded by Bradley, and passed by a thunderous voice vote that the Secretary be instructed to cast a unanimous ballot for the officers nominated by the committee.

The following officers and councilors were elected:

President  - Harry S. Ladd

1st Vice-President - Luna B. Leopold

2nd Vice-President - Walter S. White

Secretary (two-year term) - John T. Hack

Treasurer - Margaret Cooper

*Henry Faul has kindly supplied an exact copy of his award-winning remarks:

"I am prompted to comment about a distressing aspect of some projects in modern science: We don't know what we are going to do, We don't know how we are going to do it, and we don't know where we are going to do it. But we know EXACTLY how much it is going to cost "
